(for the 1972 edition) The Soviet North for Tikhon Zakharovich Semushkin was the country of his life and literary youth. The author of the novel “Alitet Goes to the Mountains” lived in the Arctic Circle for twelve years. He was among the first envoys of the party and government, with whom Soviet power came to Chukotka. The Chukchi people, doomed by tsarism to plunder and extinction, come to a new life and join the equal family of Soviet nationalities. 1972 is the year of the half-century anniversary of the formation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a celebration of the triumph of Lenin’s national policy. The novel “Alitet Goes to the Mountains” tells how this policy was actually implemented.
