The collection “Saint Manuel the Good, Martyr” and Three More Stories” raises the “problem of one’s own personality”, in it “three more stories” are grouped around the main one, complementing the exceptional case of the unbelieving good priest, the embodiment of the “tragic sense of life”, stories about the life (or non-life) of other people. Don Manuel the Good strives, in preparation for death, to dissolve, or rather, save his personality in that which is the people of his village; Don Sandaglio hides his unknown identity, and as for the poor man Emeterio, he wants to save his for himself, hoardingly, and in the end he is used for his own purposes by another person. The life of the young heroes of “One Love Story,” who comically failed to recognize their own personality and abandoned it, becomes a tragic struggle to find this personality – one for two.
