“Supermarket” is again a story about a musty Western world where nothing ever changes, so the characters have to live in the same day several times. The setting - a school for the children of emigrants - is essentially a showcase. It is unclear in which country the school is located (either Austria or Germany), it is unclear why there are only two students in it, and one of the schoolgirls is the daughter of the director. Throughout the entire action, the director tries to foist his own dissident dossier on the journalist who regularly visits him, allegedly bought by him from the authorities. There are also two teachers at the school, and throughout the play they sort things out. Only the school principal is trying with all his might and in all possible ways to break the vicious circle. The characters' relationships with each other are especially strange. Here everyone sleeps with everyone else, everyone turns out to be victims, and everyone turns out to be torturers. Everyone lies. Everyone has their own secret and their own skeleton in the closet. In the play, everyone turns out to be not who they say they are. The heap of illogical and at the same time banal transformations really resembles a television series. It turns out that the director’s entire past struggle with the regime was pure fiction, and he wrote the dossier himself. Here Biljana Srbljanovic touches on the topic of apparent and true dissidence, which she should be well aware of.
