In the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, an unknown maniac kills several museum employees and takes an eleven-year-old boy hostage. In exchange for a hostage, the criminal demands a meeting with James North, detective of the Fourth Police District of New York.

North himself does not know that his fate is intertwined with the line of the immortal fate of the Cyclades, a Cretan who died in battle in ancient Troy, and stretches through Rome during the time of Nero, Byzantium, the empire of Charlemagne, medieval Prague, in order to strangely merge into a multifaceted entity that is the only one capable of resisting Athanatos, the embodiment of world evil.
