For the English, the name Beatrice Potter (1866–1943) is on a par with the names of L. Carroll and A.-A. Milna. In Russia, her fairy tales are almost unknown: despite their simplicity, her wonderful stories about rabbits, mice, frogs, and squirrels are extremely difficult to translate. Graham Greene called Beatrix Potter “a child’s Jane Austen” - for her depth of understanding of human nature, gentle irony, and perfection of language and style. The collection includes her best fairy tales, which have been winning the hearts of little readers all over the world for more than a hundred years. Beatrix Potter illustrated her fairy tales herself. Her gentle, touching Victorian watercolors convey all the nuances of the characters’ moods. Each page of the book has two or three illustrations, and each paragraph has its own picture. Young children especially love such books, because you don’t have to wait long for the next picture.
