The debut novel of the famous Austrian is a multi-level story of the drift of the ship "Admiral Tegetthof", which opened in the 1870s. Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The “chronicle” level is built on the basis of the diary entries of the expedition participants “frozen” into the text. At the “modern” level, the conventional protagonist is obsessed with the idea of repeating the path of the expedition. Well, an additional level is the writer himself, wedging unobtrusive remarks “to the audience” into the fabric of the narrative. “It is on these three levels that Ransmire’s novel lives, similar to a three-decker ship. And this is correct, because a real novel should follow the contours of what it tells.” (From the review.)
