“Sayings from the Azure Cliff” (“Bi yang lu”) is one of the most brilliant collections of Chan paradoxical dialogues (Chinese gunan, Japanese koan), with various commentaries and gatha poems, compiled in the 12th century. in the form of a text of ten parts (juan). The full title of this work is “Records of the sayings from the azure cliff of the Chan master Foguo Yuanwu” (“Foguo yuanwu chanshi biyan lu”).
