Gabriel Marcel is widely known in Russia as an existentialist philosopher, a forerunner of J. P. Sartre, and a contemporary of M. Heidegger. Meanwhile, Marcel is an outstanding playwright. His plays have been translated into many languages and have been staged, in addition to France, in Germany, Italy, Canada and other countries. In this collection, selected works from the dramatic heritage of Marseille are published in Russian for the first time. The plays presented here were written during the First World War and immediately after its end. Involvement in the thick of tragic events is characteristic of all of Marcel’s work. The dramaturgy of Marcel is based on the intense development of human relationships. For the first time, long before the existentialist “wave” of the forties and fifties, it brilliantly demonstrates the accuracy and uncompromisingness of psychological analysis, which later came to be considered an integral feature of the existentialist theater. For a wide range of readers interested in the history of world culture.
