The book examines five stories by I. A. Bunin from 1923, written in the Maritime Alps. Forming a semblance of a lyrical cycle, they define Bunin’s poetics of the 1920s and are studied against the background of his pre-revolutionary and late work (up to “Dark Alleys”). The analytical descriptions proposed in the book make it possible to introduce new aspects into the understanding of lyricism, especially where we are talking about the space-time of the text, about liminality, about the relationship between “I” and “not-I” in a literary text, about explicit and hidden biography. The appendix contains philosophical and theoretical generalizations concerning the understanding of history, lyrical plot and time in Russian culture of the 1920s. The book is intended for specialists in the field of the history of Russian literature and literary theory, students of the humanities, and anyone interested in lyrical prose and poetry of the 20th century.
