In 1941–1944, one of the largest humanitarian disasters in human history occurred on the banks of the Neva. A million civilians, mostly women and children, died from hunger, cold and bombing in besieged Leningrad. Another one and a half million Red Army and Wehrmacht soldiers died in the battles for the city. For many decades, the “truth” about the war was written by generals and political workers. In the mid-2000s, the St. Petersburg Channel Five made an attempt to interview the remaining ordinary survivors of the siege and front-line soldiers. About a hundred interviews were conducted. The 4-part documentary film “Leningrad Front” included only a small fraction of them. In this book, the authors tried to give a voice to everyone. For a wide range of readers.
