Pasternak’s intensive, albeit short-term studies in music and then philosophy, which preceded his entry into literature, are considered in the book as the defining coordinates of the poet’s spiritual world, at the intersection of which his work arose. Its third, equally universally important dimension is Pasternak’s commitment to “everyday life,” that is, to a directly given, unmediated and unfiltered reality by consciousness. Recreating the appearance of this “primary” reality becomes for Pasternak a cardinal philosophical and ethical task, achievable only by means of poetry, and only on the basis of a deep transcendental “rhythm”, the embodiment of which is manifested in music. An approach to Pasternak's work from the point of view of its spiritual foundations allows one to identify complex philosophical content in what on the surface looks simple or even banal, and, on the other hand, to discover the dizzying simplicity of an unmediated impression in the cubist complexity of the images of his early lyrics and prose.
