There is nothing secret that would not become obvious. The hero of the novel named Conrad Lang, who is struck by Alzheimer's disease, is called upon to discover the hidden in the obvious. The illness is serious, fraught with complete loss of memory and everyday reflexes, but pictures of childhood and the distant pre-war past come to life with incredible clarity. And the revived past, as you understand, is not to everyone’s liking. First of all, it is not to the liking of Elvira Zenn, a respectable lady, the owner of the Koch factories, who achieved her current position in society, let’s say, not in the most righteous way. Gradually, plunging into Lang's disturbed visions, the reader learns the ins and outs of this Swiss business tycoon. The most interesting thing is that Martin Suter managed to build a moral and philosophical drama as a detective story, which is why the novel is read with unflagging interest and rightfully became a bestseller in the West.
