The publication presented to the reader is the third, final work of the triptych of works of new Arabic literature - “Extracting pure gold from a brief description of Paris, or Precious divan of information about Paris” by Rifa'a Rafi' al-Tahtawi, “Step by step following al-Faryak" by Ahmad Faris al-Shidyak, "The Story of 'Isa ibn Hisham, or the Period of Time" by Muhammad al-Muwaylihi. The first and third of them were previously published in the academic series “Literary Monuments”. Prose writer, poet, linguist, translator, journalist, publisher, one of the founders of the modern Arabic novel, Ahmad Faris al-Shidyak (c. 1804-1887) belongs to the generation of writers -enlightenment writers who wrote in Arabic in the mid-19th century. The book intertwines the traditions of Eastern and European literature. Al-Shidyak pays tribute to the traditional genres of rikhla (description of a journey), maqama (picaresque short story) of classical Arabic literature, as well as the satire of Rabelais, Sterne, Swift and romantic depiction in the spirit of Lamartine and Chateaubriand. The author proclaims two main goals of his book: to introduce the reader to the wonders (gara'ib) and rare expressions (navadir) of the Arabic language; glorify women, show all their strengths and weaknesses. The interpretation of the title of al-Shidyak’s book “As-Sak ‘ala as-sak fi ma huwa al-Faryak” as “Step by step following al-Faryak” belongs to A. E. Krymsky. Here for the first time a Russian translation of the novel is published, which was carried out especially for the “Literary Monuments” series by V. N. Kirpichenko. For a wide range of readers.
