Classical German literature began not so long ago - since Martin Luther in the sixteenth century managed (with his translation of the Bible, first of all) to lay the foundations of a national literary style. Since then, each of the subsequent centuries has found its classics. The seventeenth century - Grimmelshausen and Gryphius, the eighteenth - Goethe and Schiller, the nineteenth - the romantics and Heine, the twentieth - Thomas Mann, Musil, Rilke and Kafka. Franz Kafka has a special place on this list. In terms of the number of publications, studies, reviews, responses, and mentions, he is far ahead of all his contemporaries. In all these indicators (as well as in the cost of manuscripts at international auctions), he is already approaching Goethe, whom he looked upon as God all his life. However, none of this might have happened in Kafka’s posthumous fate if his close friend Max Brod had not dared to violate the writer’s will and burned all his manuscripts. It is only thanks to Max Brod that we know Kafka’s works to the extent that we have. This collection is a literary monument to the friendship of two writers, one of whom, Max Brod, was destined for the role of executor of his great friend.
