From the translator S. Vasilik’s story “Re-education,” which is brought to the attention of readers, was published in one of the collections of modern American short stories. He amazes with the inexhaustible complacency with which the author describes the immoral and illegal actions of his heroes. His pen captures his surroundings with the meticulousness of a high-quality camera. The manner of narration, however, is not without some ironic connotations. But no more than that. Yes, they say, thieves steal, but they are not bad people at all. The detectives, called upon to protect the owner's property, steal under the noise of general dishonor. Lawyers are busy looking for how to more skillfully circumvent the laws of their country, and judges condone such morals, as long as the appearance of legality is maintained. It would seem to be a special case, but in our opinion, it reflects, like a drop of water, a world in which lawlessness and arbitrariness are elevated to the norms of everyday life.
