The artist Alexander Labas (1900–1983) lived his life “along with” the 20th century, so it contains the romance of the revolution, and accusations of formalism, and wanderings in other people’s workshops, and posthumous recognition. For more than thirty years he was erased from artistic life, so the personal exhibition held in 1976 became his second birth. The author, a famous art critic, was not interested in brushstrokes and angles when working on the book, but in references and documents, lines in other people’s memoirs and the diaries of the artist himself. From these, a “drawing of the life” of the hero was assembled, placed on the “backdrop of the era,” by an artist who managed to convey movement on the canvas, and movement at top speed. Neither before nor after him has anyone been able to express modern life with its super speeds with such sharpness and expressiveness.
