This historical figure became a character of legend long before Alexandre Dumas. He gave her this nickname, but his heroine had very little in common with the female politician, deft diplomat, writer, erudite, philanthropist and incredibly militant empress, which in fact was the last daughter of Catherine de Medici and the first wife of King Henry IV. Therefore, in order to gain insight into her complex personality and understand the meaning of her historical decisions, it was necessary to truly rewrite her biography. But the story of Margaret is also the story of the unusually wide distribution of texts about her over four centuries, marked by the biases of their authors - so diverse, like Ronsard, Brantôme, Shakespeare, Agrippa d'Aubigné, Cardinal Richelieu, Voltaire, Mérimée, Stendhal, Michelet, Dumas, as well as Guy Breton and Robert Merle.
