In the area of modern Tsimlyansk, on the right high bank of the Don, from where views open for many kilometers downstream and upstream, rise the remains of a beautiful white-stone fortress. At the beginning of the 9th century, here, where the stormy Don made a bend and became shallow, the Great Silk River passed path. They guarded the crossing and collected the Amazon toll. In Rus' they were called polyanitsy. The kingdom of the Amazons was located on a narrow strip from the Seversky Donets to the Volga between the powerful Khazar Khaganate and the Slavic tribes. In 804, the Khazars, having learned about the death of the great Slovenian prince Burevoy, went to war against the Slavs. The obstacles on their way were formidable warriors who were ready to fight to the death.
