In Operation Shylock, Philip Roth achieved complete indistinguishability between document and fiction. He brings to the stage a fantastic series of real and fictional characters, including himself and his double - the author of the provocative theory of the exodus of Jews from Israel to Europe, intelligence agents, a war criminal, Palestinian refugees and a compelling woman from a certain organization of Anti-Semites Anonymous. The psychologism and stylistics of the novel will be especially interesting to the Russian reader - after all, the narrator himself finds echoes of F. M. Dostoevsky in it. For this work, the author was awarded the PEN-Faulkner Prize.
