The name of Diocletian is inextricably linked with a turning point in the fate of the Roman Empire: numerous military emperors, permanent coups d'etat and the civil war that blazed throughout the state in the middle of the 3rd century practically destroyed the glory and power of invincible Rome. Having ascended the throne in 284, Diocletian restored the unity of the empire with an iron fist, inflicting one after another defeats on internal and external enemies. His reign was marked by political reform, which resulted in the formation of the famous tetrarchy - two Augustans and their deputies Caesars, four rulers of a single state organism. Having restored the greatness of the empire, Diocletian voluntarily abdicated power and spent the last years of his life growing cabbage in his favorite residence of Nicomedia, apparently considering his mission as the restorer of the Roman Empire completed.
