The reader is presented with a very valuable, interesting and lively work by the late Kursk Archpriest Lev Lebedev, “Notes on Pastoral Theology.” For several decades, manuals on pastoral theology have not been published in Russian. The classic work of Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky) “Teaching on the Shepherd, Shepherding and Confession” (republished abroad in 1966, and in Russia in 1995) is well known; “Orthodox Pastoral Ministry” by Protopresbyter George Shavelsky (Sofia, 1930): “Orthodox Pastoral Ministry” by Archimandrite Cyprian Kern (Paris, 1957); “Pastoral Theology” by Archimandrite Konstantin Zaitsev (Jordanville, 1961) and “Lessons in Pastoral Theology” by Protopresbyter Vasily Boshchanovsky (Jordanville, 1961). But all these works were published more than 30 years ago. The work of Archpriest Lev Lebedev, the main part of which was written in 1988-1989, is small in volume and divided into two parts: the first is theoretical, and the second is the theological justification of the life and ministry of the pastor . Notes about. Leo’s poems were originally published chapter by chapter in the magazine of students of the Holy Trinity Theological Seminary “Russian Shepherd”, and now, at the request of numerous readers of the magazine, we are publishing them in separate embossing. Father Leo takes into account many modern phenomena that a pastor has to deal with. His observations and thoughts are both very modern (in the best sense of the word) and rooted in the patristic traditions of holy Orthodoxy. In the “Notes” one feels that the author not only made certain observations and conclusions, but that he himself “passed through the crucible of his mind and processed in the laboratory of his heart” (the expression of Prof. V. F. Pevnitsky) everything he writes about. His words are warmed by the light and warmth of personal experience and this gives him special power. One priest told us that after reading the chapter on personal life from the pastoral notes of Fr. Leo, where the prayer life of the shepherd is discussed, his attitude towards prayer has completely changed.
