Вілл Трент, як головний герой, є дуже багатогранним персонажем, чия боротьба з власними демонами та спроби зрозуміти мотивацію свого наставника Аманди Вагнер роблять його ще більш цікавим. Книга не лише про вбивство, а й про кохання, вірність та пошук правди, що робить її неймовірно емоційною. Слотер вміло грає на контрастах між добром і злом, а також показує, як важливо мати сміливість стикатися з минулим.
