In his declining years, having already completed the main works of his life and settled in Sergiev Posad, closer to St. Sergius, Lev Aleksandrovich Tikhomirov begins to write his memoirs, united under the general title “Shadows of the Past.” Everything that passed before the eyes of this outstanding man over more than seven decades of his life should have been reflected in his memoirs. Lev Aleksandrovich started them in 1918, in an atmosphere of triumphant revolutionism. He intended to write about eighty essays. These are memoirs written by a Christian writer, whose goal is not to settle scores with his friends and opponents, with his past, but to create a kind of documentary cross-section of the era, its spiritual moods and social aspirations. In the narration of the picture, “family Chronicles" alternates with stories about Russian and foreign public figures. Here are the revolutionaries Mikhailov, Perovskaya, Khalturin, Plekhanov; “shadows of the past” of revolutionary and conservative France; Vladimir Solovyov, Russian conservatives K. N. Leontyev, P. E. Astafiev, A. A. Kireev and others. *** The memoirs of L. A. Tikhomirov were not completed, the sequence of the essays that comprise them was not established by the author. In compiling this book, we tried to arrange the individual parts of “Shadows of the Past” in such a sequence that the events formed a single narrative. We took the liberty of including in the collection “My Memoirs,” written by L. A. Tikhomirov in the 90s, which fill in the gaps in his later memoirs.
