He did not die in the camp, but went through all the circles of hell; he was not an oppositionist, but almost his entire biography bore the stamp of outcaste. A doctor who wrote scientific works in a prison cell, he not only waited for their publication, but also received the Stalin Prize for them under Stalin. At the same time, he was both a surgeon and a clergyman of the Russian Orthodox Church, an archbishop... Such a figure is a real find for a biographer, a psychologist and a historian. And Mark Aleksandrovich Popovsky was precisely a tireless recreation of historical characters. When he became interested in Professor Voino-Yasenetsky, Archbishop Luke, he was already the author of a whole series of books about famous doctors and biologists. To recreate the image of this unusual man, Popovsky spent years, secretly from the authorities, traveling around cities, questioning witnesses and collecting documents. This work took twenty years of hard work.
