“The Egyptian” (1945) is a historical novel by the Finnish writer Mika Valtari (1908–1979), which became a bestseller all over the world and has been translated into more than thirty languages. Mika Valtari managed to create a work that attracts not only with its exciting plot twists and turns authentic historical surroundings, but also a feeling of involvement in the events that took place in Ancient Egypt during the reign of the reformer pharaoh Akhenaten and his royal wife Nefertiti. The effect of presence is achieved largely due to the confessional nature of the narrative, since the main character, the doctor Sinuhe, writes the story of his life only “for himself and for his own sake.” In addition, due to his profession and natural thirst for knowledge, he penetrates such doors and becomes initiated into such secrets that are not available to anyone else.
