The scene of the novel is the Black Sea, or Pont Euxine, as it was called in ancient times. The king of Pontus, Mithridates Eupator, managed to unite all the peoples inhabiting its shores into one state. It was he who was the enemy of Rome and led all those who did not want to come to terms with Roman rule. The name of Mithridates still bears a hill on the shore of the Kerch Strait, where he, having lost hope of continuing the war with Rome, took his own life.
