This is the fourth book about the work of Mikhail Tal, reflecting the period 1974-1979. Pay attention to the track record of the ex-world champion, who opened the 1974 period - all tournaments were won! His victories (without defeats!) at the end of 1979 in Montreal (together with A. Karpov) and the interzonal tournament in Riga (14 points out of 17 with a margin of 2.5 points) also look fantastic! And in just this period, the restless “Hussar from Rigi won 8 international tournaments, became a prize-winner in three more, won his last two gold medals of the USSR champion (plus one silver), Olympic gold and European medals. Attempts to conquer the chess Olympus were not abandoned. Successful performance at the interzonal tournament in Biel (1976) ended, alas, in failure in the subsequent match-tournament of three. But already in the next cycle, Tal brilliantly makes his way into the number of contenders, but, again, alas, loses the first match... And yet he took quite an active part in the fight for the world champion title, although in a different capacity, being one of Anatoly’s coaches Karpov in preparation for and directly at the matches in Baguio and Merano. The creative collaboration of two chess geniuses was undoubtedly beneficial, their triumph in Montreal is a clear example of this. Compiled by V. F. Kirillov
