Paul Diaconus (c. 725–799) - learned monk and historian from the monastery of Monte Cassino. He came from a noble Lombard family; for some time he was the court writer of the Lombard king Desiderius and the teacher of his daughter; in 783–787 was at the court of Charlemagne. Author of historical chronicles, poems and letters. His main work, “Histories of the Lombards” (Historia Langobardorum), describes in 6 books the “history of the people” from the moment of the resettlement of the Lombards in 568 from Scandinavia to Italy until the death of King Liutprand in 744. Lombard history is presented by Paul in connection with history other peoples, including the Slavs. The History of the Lombards was very popular in the Middle Ages and has come down to us in more than a hundred copies.
