Island on Bird Street is the story of an 11-year-old Jewish boy left without a family and hiding in the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. Partly biographical, it is written in the genre of a fascinating Robinsonade, and immediately after its first publication in 1981 it received the most prestigious award in Israel in the field of children's literature - the Bernstein Prize. “Island on Bird Street” has been translated into 17 languages, including Swedish, Portuguese, Korean and Japanese, and was awarded literary prizes in the USA, Sweden, Germany and the international Janusz Korczak Prize. The novel brought Uri Orlev worldwide recognition and entered the ranks of the classics of world children's and teenage literature and lists of the best books about the Second World War and the Holocaust. In Israel, a radio broadcast was made based on this book, and then a television play, which was a huge success among Israeli children. In addition, for the book “Island on Bird Street,” Uri Orlev received several literary awards in different countries - in America, Denmark, West Germany. The film “Island on Bird Street” was shot in 1997. The book was already published in Russian many years ago, but not in the most successful translation.
