The French writer and playwright Frédéric Soulier (1800–1847) gained the widest public recognition during his lifetime. His plays were performed on famous stages, and his books were published many times and translated into other languages, but the greatest fame fell to his novel “Memoirs of the Devil.” Baron François Armand de Luizzi has, like all representatives of his family, the special privilege of entering into direct contact with the Devil and even order him (not for free, of course; with evil spirits it cannot be otherwise). The young baron’s request seems harmless: he wanted to hear the stories of people from his circle as they are known only to the omniscient demon-tempter, to find out everything about tragic mistakes, about temptations that he was unable to resist, about the all-consuming power of hatred - about what is usually people don't share with anyone. To the accompaniment of “devilish revelations”, the life of de Luizzi himself develops, full of good intentions and serious mistakes, and the price that the Devil exacts becomes ever higher...
