Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu is an outstanding writer of the Victorian era, during which he was often called the “Irish Wilkie Collins” and the “Irish Edgar Poe,” the creator of the famous story “Carmilla” and many Gothic stories and novels that survived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries temporary oblivion, and then re-gained popularity among new generations of readers. The action of the novel “The House by the Cemetery” (1862, published 1863), which Le Fanu himself considered the pinnacle of his work, takes place in the village of Chapleyzode near Dublin and begins with the discovery in a local churchyard of the remains of a man who clearly died a violent death. The mystery of his personality and death leads from the 1810s to the 18th century, where at first slowly, and then more and more rapidly, an intricate criminal intrigue unfolds: an old murder, the accusation of an innocent person, attempts by a real criminal, who changed his name, to hide his past by liquidating or bribing witnesses... Several love lines and an episode hinting at the participation of supernatural forces are skillfully woven into the main detective storyline, and the author’s concealment of the true background of many events and actions complicates the psychological world of the novel and aggravates the drama of its plot collisions.
