Among the spiritual writers of his time, the outstanding French mystic Louis Claude de Saint-Martin (1743–1803), or “The Unknown Philosopher,” stands apart. The reason for this is his original and very difficult to convey in other languages way of presenting trinitarian Christian truths, framed by the symbols of chivalric Freemasonry, coming from Jean-Baptiste Willermoz (1730–1824), and Kabbalistic emblems. Published for the first time in Russian, the philosophical and mystical The work of Louis Claude de Saint-Martin “Man of Desire” represents the first part of his worldview trilogy, which includes the works “The New Man” and “The Manual of the Spirit-Man.” To translate “Man of Desire” into Russian, translator Vladimir Tkachenko-Hildebrandt used the genre of rhythmic prose, since this work was read by the author himself to the accompaniment of the piano, which was also reported by Russian admirers of “The Unknown Philosopher” at that time. Translation based on the posthumous London edition of “The Man of Desire” by Louis Claude de Saint-Martin from 1808.
