Chaos Magick has its roots in every occult tradition and in the works of many individuals. If we must name one person responsible for the birth of this dynamically developing magical system, it is the English artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare (1886–1956). True, he never imagined that this system of practical occultism, created by him exclusively for himself, would be so widely used by others. In 1978, Pete Carroll and Ray Sherwin created the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT). Their goal was to introduce practicing magicians to the ideas of Chaos. Unlike Spare, the Illuminati of Thanateros recognized the possibility and benefit of group work in Chaos Magic. The response to their first publications exceeded all expectations, and by 1982, not only individuals, but also groups of chaotic magicians were already working all over the world. The word “Chaos” in the name of this “tradition without tradition” is a recognition of infinity, indefinability, unpredictability, and multivariance The universe and the relationships existing in it. "Cosmos" (the opposite of Chaos) is the ordered universe that exists only in your head (as Robert Wilson would say), Chaos is the Universe as a "thing in itself". If a Chaos magician were asked to formulate his credo, it would look something like this (at least that's how Sherwin put it):

I don't believe in anything. I know what I know, and I postulate theories that, when tested, may or may not become part of my accepted belief system. There are no gods or demons except those that my conditioning forced me to recognize and those that I created myself. I create and destroy my beliefs based only on their usefulness. I agree with the words of the wise “Nothing is true, everything is permitted” and act accordingly - provided that this does not bother anyone.

Chaos Magic is focused not so much on the knowledge of the world (the transformation of Chaos into Cosmos), but on active formation of the reality surrounding the magician. In this case, an arsenal of all traditions of practical magic is used - from tantric Buddhism and voodoo to Crowley and Discordianism. The chaotist avoids any dogmas, frameworks, definitions, sermons, messianism, templates and rigid structures. Loves freedom and humor.
