The writer Vasil Bykov is a participant in the Great Patriotic War, which determined the themes, plots and choice of characters in his works. His story is, first of all, about a man tortured by the icy water of swamps, the wet clay of trenches, the emptiness of the forest in no man's land, the uncertainty of the outcome of the war, the temptation of powerlessness, hopelessness, apostasy, the infinity of muddy roads... The story "Wolf Pit", like most of his works V. Bykov of the 90s, is permeated with despair, and sometimes hopelessness. The once great power was destroyed by Perestroika and the times that followed it. The collapse of the army, science, economy, the death of the entire previous way of life forces desperate people to seek salvation in the Chernobyl zone.  This is where the main characters of the story meet - the deserter and the homeless.
