Raymond Chandler (1888–1959) is a recognized master of the American detective story. The Lady in the Lake, published in 1943, is written in the writer's signature "hard-boiled detective" style. Dashiell Hammett (1894–1961) is also widely known as a mystery writer. His novels “The Maltese Falcon”, “The Glass Key” and other novels were published in the USSR. The book opens with a short essay by R. Chandler, dedicated not only to the work of D. Hammett, but also to the canons of the detective genre.
