The amazing story about a fairy-tale boy who did not want to grow up has long captured the imagination of children and adults. It began with the fact that one day Peter Pan flew into the nursery window in the house where the girl Wendy and her two brothers lived. Together with Peter, they went to a distant magical island. There they met mermaids, brave Indians, a mischievous fairy and even pirates with their evil leader Captain Hook, whose fate will be in the hands of a flying boy. And here exciting adventures await the heroes. Note: The author himself and foreign publishers defined James Barry's book as a novel. In domestic book publishing, it is defined as a fairy tale. In 1918, the story was first published in Russian in a translation by L. Bubnova. In 1968, a translation by Nina Demurova, quite close to the original text, was published, which is already considered a “classic” and is being republished to this day day (reprints sometimes lack information about the translator of the poems D. Orlovskaya and the editor of the translation M. Laurie). Later, similar translations appeared - T. Vakulenko, N. Vinogradova. Most often, an abbreviated retelling of I. Tokmakova is published. There are also an abbreviated retelling by A. Faikova, M. Torchinskaya, an adapted translation by U. Istomina, abridged and adapted for children’s independent reading retellings by G. Krylov, I. Konstantinova, N. Krai, short retellings for kids by N. Vyazova, N. Dubrovskaya, V. Polishchuk. Source: Conditional cycle “Peter Pan”: The books are united by their main character, Peter Pan, but strictly speaking, they are not a cycle of works, since they largely repeat and complement each other. The story “Peter Pan in Kensington Garden” is a slightly revised six chapters of the novel “The White Bird”. The plot of the play “Peter Pan” is largely repeated in the novel “Peter Pan and Wendy.” The play “When Wendy Grew Up: An Afterthought” is a kind of optional addition to the story about Peter Pan, as indicated by the lack of any noticeable interest in it from the theater and the general public.
