The main character of the novel, a thirty-year-old journalist from Paris, goes on assignment to a remote Gascon village to report on black magic, and it’s as if he finds himself in another world. Suddenly, the hero’s whole life seems to split into two. On the one hand - a familiar existence, friends, work, beloved wife, on the other - witchcraft, a mysterious old house, a garden with a crazy gardener and a girl, the daughter of a local healer, with whom the hero falls in love as much as with his young wife. A choice must be made. The internal conflict escalates and a series of mysterious events occur. Finally, finding himself on the verge of madness, the hero finds a completely irrational way out.
