"The Cruel Sea" is a novel by the famous British writer Nicholas Monsarrat about combat operations at sea (more precisely, about the confrontation between the British and the Germans) during the Second World War. A convinced pacifist, with the beginning of the Second World War, he ended up in the army. First as an orderly, and then fresh life experience, combined with experience of sailing on yachts, led him to volunteer for the navy. Having begun service on corvettes that guarded convoys and the coast from submarines, he ended the war as a frigate commander with the rank of commander. From the prologue: “This is a long and true story about the ocean and two ships. This is a long story, because it describes a long and furious battle, the most lasting throughout the war. The heroes of this story are men and their ships. And the only villain among them is the cruel sea." Monsarrat wrote about them in sparse words with boundless love.
