“Nichlas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool in 1910. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University. His first significant book, This Is a Schoolroom, was published in 1939. He served in the British Navy during the Second World War. Naval service served as the source for many of his subsequent books. In 1956 he became head of the UK Information Center in Johannesburg and then in Ottawa. His most popular book was The Cruel Sea, published in 1951, which was adapted into a film of the same name. Monsarrat is the author of many novels, novellas and short stories. He spent the last years of his life in Malta.”
