Zen Buddhism originated in the East, psychoanalysis in the West. At first glance, there can be nothing in common between two diametrically opposed systems generated by different civilizations. However, starting from the 30s of this century, followers of psychoanalysis increasingly turned their attention to Zen Buddhism, and by the end of the 50s many became its enthusiastic supporters. This probably happened because the focus of both systems is Man; in one case his mental health, and in the other his spiritual health. The points of contact between Zen Buddhism and psychoanalysis are obvious, as evidenced by this book. It owes its appearance to a symposium dedicated to the problems of the relationship between Zen Buddhism and psychoanalysis, which was held at the Autonomous National University in Mexico City.
