Henry Kuttner is known to domestic readers primarily as a master of an ironic fantasy story. Many fell in love with the inimitable mutants Hogben, the inventor Gallegher, who was as brilliant as he was greedy for strong drinks, and many other heroes, partly thanks to whom the Golden Age of American fiction, in fact, became “golden.” But Kuttner’s literary fate was not at all linear; he was published under many pseudonyms in magazines of various thematic areas. This collection includes works in the genres of mysticism and horror, which form a significant part of his legacy. Even Kuttner’s very first story to be published, “The Graveyard Rats,” was written in the Gothic style. The author knew the famous Howard Phillips Lovecraft, together with his wife, writer Catherine Moore, was a member of the “Lovecraft circle,” and short stories related to the Cthulhu Mythos universe are also included in this book. Most of the works in Russian are published for the first time or in a new translation.
