Masuccio Guardato from Salerno, a writer of the second half of the 15th century, after Boccaccio, was the most popular of Italian short story writers. His book “Novellino”, published in 1476, was a resounding success, which was facilitated by the entertaining plots of 50 short stories, their some frivolity, and the satirical depiction of voluptuous monks and loving women. The collection was first published in Russian in 1931 and has long become bibliographic rarity. In the new edition of the book, the previously omitted dedications and afterwords to the short stories have been restored, and new notes have been prepared. The reader will have a fascinating acquaintance with one of the most famous literary monuments of the Renaissance.
