For four centuries now, the Book of Artists, written by the “northern Vasari”, painter and writer Karel van Mander, has been the most important source for studying the history of art in the Netherlands. In 1940, it was first published in Russian translation by V. M. Minorsky. Over the decades that have passed since then, this publication has become noticeably outdated. Numerous inaccuracies were revealed both in the translation of the author’s text and in the reference section; there was a need to reflect a new level of knowledge about Dutch art of the 15th–16th centuries. This publication is equipped with an introductory article, detailed comments on the biographies, the names of artists and toponyms are clarified, their spelling is brought into accordance with the rules accepted today and the established tradition.
