"Deception" is the most provocative (after "Portnoy's Disease") work of Philip Roth, the most famous American writer today. In the novel, a married American, a middle-aged Jew named Philip, living in London, and a married Englishwoman, his mistress, open up in front of each other (and in front of us). When you read their dialogue, page after page, you feel like a witness of not just one, but every extramarital affair with its tenderness and uncertainty. And while the husband in “Deception” reassures his anxious mistress and his wife, tormented by suspicions , we hear the voices of other women from his past complex and confused life of the heart. But maybe all this is a figment of fantasy? Because it's unclear where the line is between the women he imagines and the women he remembers. Roth, with incredible writing skills and a brilliant knowledge of the human soul, peels back all the superficiality and exposes the core of what is, despite the title, a love story.
