PORTNOY'S DISEASE PORTNOY'S DISEASE (named after Alexander Portnoy (1933) is a disease characterized by a constant clash of acutely experienced ethical and altruistic impulses with extreme sexual aspirations, often taking the form of sexual perversion. According to Spielvogel, “the disease is accompanied by numerous manifestations of exhibitionism, voyeurism, fetishism , autoeroticism, as well as oral intercourse; being manifestations of the patient’s “morality”, these fantasies and sexual acts, however, not only do not bring him genuine sexual satisfaction, but, on the contrary, aggravate the feeling of shame and fear of retribution, which appears to the patient, in particular, in the form castration.” (Spielvogel O. “The Puzzled Penis,” Internationale Zeitschrift für Psychoanalyse, Vol XXXIV, p. 909) Spielvogel believes that the origins of this disease lie in the mother-child relationship, which can be traced to numerous symptoms.
