"Going Away and Never Returning" is a heartfelt account of post-war Korea in the 1950s by writer Lee Ho-chul, who lived through the war firsthand and expressed his experiences in short stories. Each story will tell about the lives of people experiencing difficult post-war times: everyday life and tragedy, everyday life and war, death and life, superstition and pragmatism are intertwined here. People forced to live in a new country, divided along the 38th parallel, live this time each in their own way, finding solace in memories, superstitions and everyday life. Each story in the collection represents the story of one or more human destinies. Talking about them, the writer with everyday sincerity conveys the feeling of the new reality of an entire people, divided in two by the will of war. Here is the painful expectation of relatives from the front, and love for one’s brother, and care for one’s neighbor, and fear of the unknown, and loneliness, and guilt. But everyone will certainly find their own way in this new reality, their own consolation and their own hope for peace.
