The novel “Heavy Dreams” by Russian writer Fyodor Sologub, first published in 1895, is considered one of the very first Russian decadent novels. Teacher Login is a dreamer, abandoned in the mud of a small provincial town. He thinks more than he acts, the world around him appears through the fog of heavy dreams, only melancholy fills him with dark and terrible dreams that he can neither defeat nor drive away. The strong realism of “Heavy Dreams”, painting everyday pictures of the province, small and large the villains who control the life of the town are combined with a ghostly, intoxicating atmosphere of half-dreams, half-realities, filled with erotic dreams and attacks of fear. Such form and content of the novel were completely alien to Russian fiction of the 1880s, which vegetated entirely in everyday realism. Sologub here for the first time embodied his own artistic vision: in a realistically written novel, he did not hesitate to introduce the fantastic, the grotesque. The novel was begun by Sologub in Krestsy in 1883, it reflected the life and everyday life of Krestsy, as well as autobiographical elements associated with the writer’s service at school
