Neumair managed to achieve such heights in the field of biography and pathography that other authors are unlikely to be able to achieve. In this book, the author “explores” the case histories of J. N. Hummel, who bridged the gap between classicism and romanticism, K. M. von Weber, F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy, R. Schumann, J. Brahms and L. Bruckner. The doctor and scientist A. Neumayr analyzes the biographies of the masters, paying special attention to their illnesses or the later consequences of these illnesses. The influence of diseases on creativity also comes into the author’s field of vision. He scrupulously examines sources, statements of contemporaries, collects memories, scattered facts and often comes into conflict with medical colleagues. He makes his diagnoses based on the achievements of modern science, taking into account, however, the testimony of his contemporaries and documents of that time.
