Murdoch is one of the most complex writers in modern English literature. She often uses allegories, polysemantic symbols that help reveal philosophical ideas, and skillfully uses humor and irony; combines moral and philosophical thoughts about the reasons for the actions of his heroes, about their life choices with entertainment, calling on the arsenal of detective, picaresque, gothic novel and melodrama. But Murdoch’s main interest is in the depiction of human character: testing her characters in complex and unusual situations, she often does not pass any judgment on them, leaving the reader to decide for themselves what is good and what is bad. The philosophical work presented here by A. Murdoch is “The Sovereignty of the Good” in Russian translation published in the magazine “Logos”, 2008, No. 1. Translated by Ekaterina Vostrikova and Yulia Kulgavchuk from the publication Murdoch Iris, The Sovereignty of Good. London: Ark, 1985.
