Fernando Aramburu wrote the novel “Homeland” after the Basque terrorist group ETA announced a cessation of armed struggle. Then, according to the writer, he had an urgent need to understand what was happening to people during this tragic period, why murders and violence aroused support or sympathy among many, while those who disagreed remained fearfully silent. Refusing the role of a judge, Aramburu, using the example of two Basque families, essentially tells the recent history of an entire people. This is a novel about love and hate, friendship and betrayal, faith and despair. Over the past decades, no book in Spain has received as many awards as “Motherland” by F. Aramburu. The novel was named the best book of the year, received the National Prize for Literature, the Critics' Prize, the International Club of Journalists Prize, the Italian Strega and Lampedusa Prizes. The total circulation has already exceeded one million. In 2020, a television version of the novel (8 episodes), produced by HBO, will be released.
